Why Use Auxiliary Stabilizers?
The main function of stabilizers, also known as ‘outriggers’, is to keep a truck
and crane unit from tipping while in work mode. This can generally be
accomplished with a single set of stabilizers.
Adding a second set of stabilizers can be beneficial for two reasons. Auxiliary
stabilizers create a solid, stable platform for loading and unloading materials.
This additional support minimizes shifting and leaning creating a much less
stressful work environment for the crane operator.
Another important but less recognized benefit of auxiliary stabilizers is the
reduced wear and tear on the rotation system due to limited side loading, We
know from our experience with marine cranes that truck cranes installed on boats
tilting only 7 degrees must be de-rated to 50% of their lift capacity. We can
only speculate about the additional repair cost and loss of productivity
resulting from operating cranes without adequate stabilizers!
